al-Bukhaaree and Muslim

Anas (radhi-yAllaahu ‘anhu) said the supplication most often recited by the Prophet (sal-Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) was:

« رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً، وَ فِي الآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً، وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ »

«Our Lord, give us in this world [that which is] good and in the Hereafter [that which is] good, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.»

Lataa.if al-Ma’aarif

Ibn Rajab said:

And this supplication is among the most all-encompassing of supplications for [that which is] good. And the Prophet [sal-Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam] used to recite it often; it has been narrated that it was the supplication he would recite the most. And if he made a supplication, he would recite this [supplication] along with it, because it combines the good of this world and the Hereafter.

Tafseer al-Qurtubee

In his tafseer [of the Qur.aan], al-Qurtubee related:

It was said to Anas (radhi-yAllaahu ‘anhu): “Pray to Allaah for us.”

So he said: “O Allaah! Give us in this world [that which is] good and in the Hereafter [that which is] good, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.”

They said: “Give us more.”

He said: “What [more] do you want?! I have asked [Allaah] for [that which is good in] the world and the Hereafter.”
